Coastal Research Center Looking Toward the Future

Last month, OE resumed an engagement with the Coastal Research Center (CRC) to enhance the scale, relevance, and sustainability of the Center. CRC staff and leadership are refining the Center’s mission and vision and developing actionable priorities.
OE is leveraging principles from Liberating Structures and Strategic Doing to guide generative conversations. The work will continue through the fall, resulting in a roadmap and action plan.

Highlights from OE’s October Session: Project Management for Non-project Managers

Over 200 UVA colleagues gathered to learn effective approaches for project planning and implementation. The session delivered by TSI, Inc. was guided by a framework of 12 basic steps for project management: project planning and tracking, implementation management, expectations management, monitor and reporting, impact management, project/workstream integration, delivery assurance, financial management, project administration, risk management, resource management, and scope management. The workshop focused on project planning and tracking, monitor and reporting, and scope management as the most valuable functions.
Here are some recommendations shared in the workshop:
  • Develop a document that addresses the schedule, resources, and scope. These three project constraints must be balanced to ensure quality. All changes to scope will have an impact on the schedule and resources.
  • A scope document can also include assumptions, dependencies, costs, critical success factors, known risks, and key team members and their roles.
  • For planning and tracking, develop a work breakdown schedule that includes phases, activities, and tasks of the project. Start small and build your experience with the project tracker.
  • The monitor and reporting function includes deciding the right reporting frequency and shows the status of key elements and impacts. Focus on the most crucial information, and don’t avoid reporting an item at risk to draw attention to the issue and ask for help or resources.
Additional information may be found at TSI’s blog and OE’s Resources Page.
