Project Management for Non-Project Managers

There is no denying that the ability to take on a special project (or any project for that matter) and complete it successfully is an essential ingredient to thrive in your job.
This workshop is focused on sharing the most important skills and tools that you should know to improve your mastery of Project Management. Here, you will learn that project managers are more than administrators and project management is more than “scorekeeping”.

In this workshop, you will learn:
  • The twelve project management functions
  • How to develop a project scope (via a project charter) and how to avoid “scope creep”
  • How to develop a project plan from scratch, and how to monitor your project
  • Project status reporting concepts and how to effectively communicate your status and move from “red” to “green.”
Presenters: Carl Manello, Senior Consultant, and Dan Feely, Managing Partner, Transforming Solutions, Inc.
When: October 25, 2023, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Details: Zoom/Online - Access information will be provided to registrants

Certificate through NCCI – Information: Getting from Concepts to Outcomes

A great deal of information is available within our institutions and externally. However, most institutions have too few leaders and facilitators with the competencies, skills, and tools necessary for identifying the right information and for effectively curating, analyzing, and disseminating it to guide effective decision-making.
The Network for Change and Continuous Innovation (NCCI) in collaboration with Nuventive is offering a program to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to facilitate more effective use of information, information tools, and information strategy within their institutions.
  • Online and synchronous on October 10th, October 24th, November 7th, November 28th, and December 12th.
  • Cost: $750 for members. (UVA is a member. To create an account, sign up with a UVA email).

Welcome OE Student Interns for Fall 2023!

The OE Office is hosting two Project Associate Interns, Anh Ly and Angelina Tomseth. Anh is participating through the UVA Internship Placement Program (IPP) to gain practical, professional experience for credit. Angelina is a former IPP intern who has selected to stay another year after completing the program.
About Angelina
  • From Vienna, VA
  • Fourth year
  • Majors: Economics and English
Why did you choose to return as an OE intern this fall?
“I was really happy with my past experience as an OE intern, and I thought it would be great to continue it during my last year at UVA. It is particularly fun to learn a lot more about UVA, whether that's through working with input from consulting sessions, attending guest lectures, or exploring Grounds during in-person surveys or tours.” - Angelina

What are your expectations for your internship experience?
“I expect to understand more about how UVA functions behind the scenes, especially since I hope to attend more OE sessions and better grasp how OE serves the UVA community.” - Angelina
About Anh
  • From Ashburn, VA
  • Third year
  • Majors: Applied Statistics and Psychology
As you considered internships, why was OE your first choice?
“I wanted to see the difference between how small vs. large organizations operate. I wanted experience working with data and OE provided that.” – Anh

What are your expectations for your internship experience?
“I expect to learn more about what OE does as a whole and witness collaboration between different departments at UVA. I want to see how UVA as a business operates in the higher education industry.” – Anh

School of Education and Human Development (EHD) Strategic Planning Working Sessions

Building upon work from the spring and summer, OE partnered with the School of EHD to engage faculty and staff and solicit input on the developing mission, vision, and strategic areas of focus as part of the overall school strategic planning process. More than 150 faculty and staff participated in two working sessions, providing important insights for the next phase of work.
Two approaches from the EHD sessions that can be applied with various content and in numerous settings:

Tool for Engaging Everyone in Making Sense: Conversation Café
You can include and engage any number of people in making sense of current conditions and lay the ground for new strategies and ideas to emerge.
  • State the themes of the conversation, usually in the form of a question(s)
  • Designate one person per table to be the host. Organize as many tables as there are themes to discuss.
  • Participants engage on the theme, then move to another table/a different theme.  Multiple rounds so participants can engage on multiple topics.
Tool for Iteration and Innovation: I like/I wish/I wonder
A simple framework to explore ideas and gather feedback from groups of any size. Collecting structured feedback leads to improvements and progress.

Choose what you want feedback on – a process, an idea, a mission or vision statement, a meeting, etc.  Have participants complete the open-ended statements:
  • I like…
  • I wish…
  • I wonder…
“I like” is a starting point for what went well or what is positive about an idea;  “I wish” is a starting point for what could be done differently/improved;  “I wonder” can be a starting point for questions that are still unanswered, and ideas.
