Liberating Structures: Unleashing the Power of Groups for Better Results

Learn how to use the tools of Liberating Structures (LS) to advance the work of any group. These approaches promote engagement, inclusion, and collaboration to achieve your meeting purpose and organizational goals.  LS can be applied for idea generation, solving challenges, collecting feedback, sense-making, planning, and more.

This session is designed for those new to LS as well as those familiar who desire a refresh.  Participants will have an opportunity to experience a sample of structures and specifically how to apply LS in their area.

“Liberating Structures transformed the way I design
           and engage in meetings.”

Cre8tive Leadership: How to Create, Communicate & Implement Big Ideas

At the heart of innovation is the introduction of something new that adds value. These new ideas help you see a vision for the future, achieve simplicity for a complex task, arrive at a consensus to end a conflict, or generate new revenue in times of budget cuts. Chic Thompson will take you on an interactive journey through the steps of strategic curiosity that foster a mindset of innovation:
  1. Be Curious First...Critical Second: When you see or hear a new idea, be curious first to explore the possibilities and be critical second to calculate the probabilities
  2. Look for Second & Third "Right" Answers: Reframe your challenge and see it from different perspectives to generate fresh new solutions
  3. The Question is the Answer: Ask great questions to reveal new ideas
  4. Think in Opposites: Act on opposite/paradoxical trends and turn obstacles into an opportunity
  5. DIY Brainstorming: Come up with ideas when you're stuck, arms crossed, and staring at your computer
  6. Keep Your Brain Alive: Keep your mind sharp so you can come up with ideas anytime and any place
Presenter: Chic Thompson, Fellow at Darden and Executive Director of WagiLabs
When: November 4, 2021, 1:00 p.m to 2:30 p.m.

The Bolivar Network/LatinX Board

Organizational Excellence recently partnered with the Board of the Bolivar Network, an affinity group in the UVA Alumni Association.  In their words the sessions “provided a safe space to think big, plan ahead, and ideate on what we can reasonably accomplish in a year as a group.”

The virtual planning sessions resulted in a shared direction and an actionable path of near-term priorities to serve and advocate for the LatinX, Hispanic, and Latin American UVA communities of students and alumni.

Planning: Questions to Ask

  • Where are we today - where are we starting from? Where do we have strength and momentum? Are there things stuck or stalled?
  • Where do we want to be –what are our aspirations, dreams, hopes? What does success look like?
  • What’s happening around us (internal and external) that might impact or influence our path?
  • How will we get there – our desired future? (below is the Strategic Doing framework to move from ideas to execution)
                                                  What COULD we do?
                                                  What SHOULD we do?
                                                  What WILL we do?
  • What will we NOT DO? Is there anything we should stop or pause?
  • How will we monitor our progress?
