The Emotional Journey of Organizational Change: A Case Study

Much of the high rate of failure, employee disengagement, and cost of change can be traced back to leaders approaching change as strictly a strategic engagement.
However, leading your organization through change is as much an individual journey as it is a strategic one. Rather than the typical view of change as a phased strategic process, this discussion models change as a psychological journey that each member of an organization experiences in a unique manner. Through this perspective, this session explores change as an emotional journey, with guidance and tools on how to better facilitate that journey for the individuals in your organizations which can lead to higher engagement and change success.

Supporting the Strategic Research Infrastructure Initiative (SRII) Steering Committee

The University launched an ambitious research infrastructure project in fall 2022 with the goal of identifying infrastructure investments that would advance the University’s research goals. After many months of work, each the six working groups put forward a set of recommendations to the Steering Committee. The OE team supported the Steering Committee as they took an integrated view of all recommendations. The committee reviewed recommendations, identified relationships among ideas, and sorted and prioritized ideas to be considered by leadership.

Flash Talks: Share Information in a Short Amount of Time

Flash Talks are a quick, effective way to provide a concise introduction or overview of work and key concepts. Say more with less and bring a topic to life. In the SRII Steering Committee meeting described above, this method was used to share generally about the recommendations coming forward from each work group.
Flash Talks – What do they look like?
  • Timed segments, typically anywhere from about 2 – 5 minutes each. Time limitations are strictly enforced. Often a 30 second warning is given to speakers.
  • Slide limitations, typically 1-3 slides, although some allow no visual aids
  • No introduction to the talk or questions taken during the talk
  • Other variations:
    • Group several flash talks together on a similar theme
    • Set aside time after the flash talk for participants to process together in small groups the information shared, provide a set of guiding questions for discussion
    • Have breakout sessions after the talks where participants can self-select a flash talk topic for further discussion
    • Combine with a poster session, a common approach at conferences
