Bending Granite: Leading Change in the Culture of Higher Education

True stories of leading change in the book Bending Granite illustrate concepts that transcend a broad range of organizations. At the same time, we also know that culture matters. Higher education’s hallmarks for independent, critical thinking and distributed governance create a culture that can make change feel like "bending granite." Maury Cotter and Kathleen Paris, co-compilers of Bending Granite, will focus this interactive session on leading change in higher education, with a “Pull v. Push” approach.
This new book, Bending Granite: 30+ true stories of leading change (ACTA, 2022), presents stories across a range of organizations and cultures. UW-Madison pilot program for addiction treatment goes national. An office staff, after years of troubled relationships, becomes a model for other departments. A hospital cuts its patient preventable accident rate to zero. A low-income neighborhood partners with Madison police officers. The stories illustrate fundamental concepts and approaches to inspire you to lead change from wherever you are by sharing what works and how you can adapt successful strategies.
Presenters:
Maury Cotter, Co-founder and Director Emeritus, Office of Quality Improvement, UW-Madison, and co-founder and past President - NCCI.
Kathleen A. Paris, Ph.D., Distinguished Consultant Emeritus, UW-Madison, Author, and Consultant.

Operational Planning for New Spaces

Recently, an ad-hoc group with members from schools and central areas convened to share learnings for opening a building. They shared learnings and questions based on local experiences that are transferable and applicable from building to building in an effort to promote a more comprehensive approach. In addition, several key pan-institutional opportunities for collaboration emerged.

Using the Integrated Space Planner from Brightspot Strategy as a guiding framework, the group developed a list of questions and topics that are helpful when considering opening new spaces. These included building access, service offerings, staffing, signage, and visitors. One opportunity the group identified and continues to collaborate on is how to more effectively schedule and manage events.

With support from OE, the collective wisdom benefitted the direct participants from Contemplative Sciences Center, School of Data Science, Facilities Management, McIntire School of Commerce, Student Health, School of Engineering, and Student Housing. The next phase of work is how to scale and operationalize this framework and knowledge, so it is accessible to anyone at the University to assist them in opening new spaces effectively.

Operating Principles for Effective Teams

As part of their leadership team retreat, the University Library Special Collections team collaborated on developing operating principles for their group and are refining and practicing their principles.

When teams jump into doing work without establishing how they want to collaborate, it’s a recipe for clashes, drama, and miscommunication. Operating Principles provides a simple structure for the team to draft 4-6 ground rules everyone can agree on and abide by, to help you work together more effectively from the start. Operating Principles engages all and only takes about 30 minutes to complete.

Visit the SY Partners toolkit to learn the five steps for any group to co-create Operating Principles and other tools designed to help teams flourish.
