Gather Well at Work: A Human-Centered Approach to Meetings and More

“The most sacred thing we have is our collective and shared time together. Gatherings are more than the sum of their parts. Done well they are meaningful, purposeful and even transformative.”
Priya Parker
Meetings, events and gatherings – virtual and in-person - are part of work every day. Based on key principles from “The Art of Gathering” by Priya Parker, this session will provide a framework to guide the effective design and delivery of any group gathering - regular meetings, committee meetings, retreats, planning sessions, celebrations, and more. Learn how to be more intentional and thoughtful in the way you bring people together to elicit connection, meaning, and creativity.

Supporting the School of Nursing Strategic Planning Process

In the fall, the School of Nursing (SON) kicked off strategic planning with faculty and staff conversations. Through interactive sessions designed to tap into the group’s collective wisdom, participants shared their experiences, insights, and ideas to shape the future of SON. This foundational input will inform and shape the next steps in planning through the spring, contributing to an action-oriented plan to advance the school’s aspirations and priorities.

Academic Leaders Learning Together: Arts and Sciences Department Chair Leadership Series

OE is partnering with Jenn Bair, Sarah Betzer, and Laura Galloway, Academic Associate Deans in Arts and Sciences, to host a department chair leadership series. The series is intended to provide networking and collaboration opportunities to support the success of those serving in the role. Two sessions were held in the fall that included workshops on strategic planning and fostering positive departmental environments.

The OE Leadership Council, OE’s governance group, is interested in identifying ways to share the framework and content of the leadership series with other schools.

Collecting Student Input: Go to Them

Collecting insights from students on a college campus can sometimes be tricky: where is the best place to reach them, when is the best time, and how do we entice them to participate? In our work with the University Police Department (UPD), we wanted to learn more about student awareness and perceptions of UPD community engagement programs and used a quick, verbal pulse-survey method: boots on the ground, face-to-face, series of short answer questions.

We developed a short survey for pop-up conversations with students all around Grounds. By meeting students (literally) where they are, we collected 254 responses in less than 12 hours (divided among 5 student data collectors out in the field). The feedback was rich and informative.

This sample data collection approach has utility far beyond students. Consider how you might gain useful feedback and input by engaging your stakeholders in their natural setting and fitting into their schedules.
